BC “Spartak” sports director gave an exclusive interview to the “Sport Weekend” reporter in which he talked about the team’s latest acquisitions and season preparation plans.
Following Russian basketball players Anton Ponkrashov and Vladimir Dyachok, Stephane Lasme, a Gabon citizen who graduated from an American university and played the last two seasons for the European League teams – “Partizan” Belgrade and “Maccabi” Tel Aviv -  has signed contract with “Spartak”. The question about this player was the one with which we started our interview.

“Spartak” sports director talks about the drawing for the European cup season and the club's newcomers. On Thursday Barcelona witnessed the drawing for the European cup which for Saint-Petersburg “Spartak” starts with qualification round. Our team was among the seeds but the rival drawn for us is the strongest team in the second group – PAOK from Thessaloniki that took the 5th place in the regular championship of Greece. The first game will take place on September 29th at PAOK’s ground, the return game – on October 6th at “Yubileyny”.

“Triumph” (Lyubertsy) – “Spartak” (Saint Petersburg) - 76:79 (22:19, 20:22, 16:15, 19:23)
In the first match of the semifinal for the 5-8th positions (the series lasts until two wins) “Spartak” won over the hosts of the court in Lyubertsy near Moscow. “Triumph” was leading during three quarters; however, during the last 10 minutes Zvi Sherf’s team turned the match around.

In order to “warm the public up”, it is customary to let variety performers sing some songs before real “stars” appear on the stage. Their task is to strum something with the help of their guitars, mumble some songs in a microphone and make the public stretch their legs. Then they go to the backstage as unknown as they used to be before the concert.  The Spartak and the Khimki Teams managed to escape from such a common lot. Following getting into the Finals of Four of the Russia Cup Spartak from the Northern Capital won a most important victory in a game of a regular Super League A championship, thus its chances for play-off  stopped being “theoretical” and became “quite realistic”...
Russia cannot be understood with just the mind... Yesterday Spartak needed the victory more than ever; the game was eventually scheduled at the time convenient for spectators, just before the team won a most important victory in a very difficult game... Still the Jubilee Sports Palace was unpleasantly empty – the Saturday cup anti-record fell... Well, those who did come, never regretted it!

In European cups “Spartak” is much more confident than in the Russian Superleague. In Belgium  the red-and-whites scored the second convincing victory over “Charleroi”, and it is the first time in European cups that our team can win in its group.

An Israeli specialist arrived to Saint Petersburg from Tel-Aviv yesterday evening. Having checked in the hotel in 10 (!) minutes, new head coach of the red& whites in good mood hurried up to get acquainted with the team on the first training session. In men’s basketball Superleague A the first resignation of a coach has taken place. Yesterday the Serbian mentor of St. Petersburg’s Spartak Aleksandr Trifunovic tendered his resignation which was approved by the management of the club from the banks of the Neva.
