Sport weekend | Spartak from Petersburg: Win together with the siren!

24.05.2010 Zvi Sherf’s team won the first game from Triumph
“Triumph” (Lyubertsy) – “Spartak” (Saint Petersburg) - 76:79 (22:19, 20:22, 16:15, 19:23)
In the first match of the semifinal for the 5-8th positions (the series lasts until two wins) “Spartak” won over the hosts of the court in Lyubertsy near Moscow. “Triumph” was leading during three quarters; however, during the last 10 minutes Zvi Sherf’s team turned the match around.
The fate of the game was decided during the last second! At the score 76:76 “Triumph” got the right to an attack; however, Petersburg players were great in their defense. White’s blocked shot, Zozulin’s rebound, Pashutin’s pass and Kolesnikov’s perfect shot from behind the arc: this is what the deciding attack of Spartak was like, the attack that brought Spartak its win....
The second match of the series will take place on Wednesday, May 26, in “Yubileiny” (beginning at 7 p.m.). On this day “the red and white” may win a pass into the tournament final for 5-8th positions. In case of Spartak’s defeat in this game the finalist will be determined in Lyubertsy in the third game on May 28.
Petersburg players were the only ones to win an away game.
1/2 final (until 3 wins)
CSKA – “Dinamo” - 77:58 (18:22, 19:12, 16:14, 24:10). The score in the series: 1-0.
“Khimki” - UNICS - 80:71 (15:16, 23:22, 20:16, 22:17). The score in the series: 1-0.
Tournament for 5-8th positions
“Triumph” – “Spartak” SPb - 76:79 (22:19, 20:22, 15:15, 19:23). The score in the series: 0-1.
“Lokomotiv-Kuban” – “Krasnye Krylya” - 87:82 ОТ (16:14, 24:19, 10:21, 22:18, 15:10). The score in the series: 1-0.
In the first match of the semifinal series for the 5-8th positions “Spartak” laid an excellent groundwork for reaching the final.  In Lyubertsy the Petersburg players who had big staffing problems snatched the victory at the last second. Simultaneously with the final siren a long-range shot by Evgeny Kolesnikov buried the hopes of “Triumph” for a lead in the series.
The Spartak’s guard played a phenomenal game demonstrating one-hundred percent performance. Kolesnikov made perfect medium- and long-range shots, three times each, and converted all five penalty shots. The candidate to the Russian national team was matched by the players of the starting five as well as Roman Levter who safeguarded the principal center.
As already reported by “Sport Weekend”, after the fifth match in Khimki the managers of “Spartak” thought it inexpedient to bring the team back to Petersburg. There was really no point in flying home to go back to Moscow region the next day. Zvi Sherf’s team set a camp in “Milan” Hotel of the capital city where it got ready for the game with “Triumph” for two days.
“Spartak” may be compared to a sick-ward now. In Lyubertsy the head coach of the team Zvi Sherf had to do without Egor Meshcheryakov. Considering the fact that Milovan Rakovich just did not go to Moscow region with the team, the choice of “big players” was limited down to three basketball players who did not have much playing time in the regular championship.
However, “Triumph” that failed to declare Nikita Shabalkin for the game against the Petersburg team also has problems with “big players” and this is why Stanislav Eremin has to keep more often a light five on the court. The pre-start estimates, however, named a team from Moscow region that lost two matches of three of the regular championship to “Spartak” the favourite of the pair. The battle against “Khimki” could not fail to tell on the physical and emotional condition of Petersburg players while “Triumph” had time for target-oriented preparation  for the game.
Eremin also decided to strike the motivation chord of his team putting two fosterlings of Petersburg basketball, Pavel Sergeev and Konstantin Nesterov, into the starting lineup. Together with them the match was started by Vadim Panin, captain of the Moscow region club, and two Americans: Brion Rash and Paul Miller. So far these are the only legionnaires of Eremin. Crisis, you know.
It was easy to figure out the starting five of “Spartak”. Like in the recent matches against “Khimki”, the game in Lyubertsy was started by Levance Fields, Zakhar Pashutin, James White and Alexander Dedushkin. The prestart distribution of the forces was actually equal: two legionnaires and problems in the “big” line in each team.
The echo of the great judge scandal  reached the office of the RBF in Lyubertsy. The jury that was to service the match had to be changed urgently. Vladimir Sosedov, an experienced Moscow referee, serviced the game together with the son of almost the best known Soviet referee Aleksei Davydov and maksim Kornev from Kaluga. There were naturally no instructions from “Cherny” before the game and the referees whistled what they saw.
From the first minutes of the game there was a fair field and no favour on the court.  In the first quarter neither team managed to get ahead by more than three points. This was the groundwork laid by the hosts by the time of the small break.
The second quarter started according  to Stanislav Eremin’s scenario. Within the first five minutes the hosts got 12 points while the guests got only three. As a result, “triumph” got the lead - 34:22. There was no panic on Spartak’s sidelines. Sherf’s exact instructions – and a very effective chase was organized through the efforts of Fields and Kolesnikov. The score was drawn - 36:36 and after Fields’ shot Petersburg team got the lead.
The second quarter ended, however, with a small advantage of the Moscow region team. “Triumph” may have left for the break with a four-point lead. Kolesnikov prevented that. He ripped the ball and scored with a foul. He also converted the penalty shot. The teams went to their change rooms with the score of 42:41 in favour of the Moscow region team. .
Petersburg players began the second half by actually the starting five. Levter just replaced Dedushkin in the five number position who had already got enough fouls. The third 10-minute period was a battle of nerves rather than beautiful basketball. This was evidenced by the score. Both teams managed to add 15 points each to their active stock.
At the beginning of the fourth 10-minute period Fields who now has a brilliant play-off sent his regards to the hosts by two perfect throws from behind the arc. “Spartak” got the lead and then the hosts had to catch up. Through strenuous efforts two minutes before the end of the normal playing-time Panin, captain of “Triumph”, restored the balance - 76:76.
Another battle of nerves started. Neither team succeeded in scoring. When it already seemed that there was no way to avoid overtime Kolesnikov made a long-range shot and scored. Bravo, Evgeny! Bravo, “Spartak”!
Actually seven Petersburg players (Antipov, Kuznetsov and Yudin taken together played just a bit more than one minute) outplayed the favourite of the pair that used ten players. With the exception of Nesterov who failed to get into the game all players got points. But “Spartak” won, nevertheless!
The second match of the series will take place on Wednesday, May 26. The match will start at 7 p.m. in “Yubileiny”.
